Professional Overview
Mr. Kamban Hirasen serves as a Senior Researcher at the Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office (HE2RO) in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is notably the co-lead for the TB Sequel I and II socio-economic sub-studies. His expertise also extends to health economic evaluations, particularly in assessing patient and provider costs associated with DS-TB.

Educational Background
Kamban holds a Master’s degree in Population Studies / Demography from the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) and is currently pursuing a PhD in Health Economics at the University of Cape Town (UCT). His comprehensive training in demography, epidemiology, and health economics equips him with a distinctive approach to addressing the public healthcare challenges prevalent in South Africa and other low-middle income countries.

Research Contributions
Since joining HE2RO in 2014, Kamban has dedicated over a decade to exploring the epidemiological and economic impacts of the HIV and TB epidemics. His recent work includes leading economic evaluations in South Africa and the Philippines, focusing on the cost and cost-effectiveness of the BPaL regimen for DR-TB. Furthermore, he is actively involved in tracking and evaluating DS-TB treatment protocols and costs within both the public and private sectors to support the development of South Africa’s forthcoming National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill. To date, he has secured 6 first-author peer-reviewed publications in press and has 3 first-author manuscripts under review.
